Four months ago, I was pondering on the steps I took to get to where I am in my career. It all started 6 years ago, sometime in 2016, when I decided to “write for fun.” Before then, I have written some novels, while in secondary school – but I lost the manuscripts at some point.

In late 2016, I decided to give writing another shot. This time, I wasn’t interested in writing novels. I opted to try my hands on something bigger. I opted to write for the web. I want to have my writeups on the Internet, where millions of people can have access to it.

I started writing for fun just by getting some topics and developing the content. With time, I sourced for some jobs to see if I would be paid. Luckily, I got a client here in Nigeria, and after our communications online, he decided to give me a try.

He gave me some topics in the electronics and smartphone niche. At the time, I was using a Nokia Asha 200 (button phone). I would make my researches with the phone and type the information based on the topic given.

Afterwards, I would forward it to the client via his email address. With time and following the client’s corrections, I was able to get better at content writing. This time, he doesn’t necessarily need to vet the articles before publications because I have been able to master how to write accurately and without mistakes.

Here is the mind-blowing part. At the time, I was using a cybercafé because I didn’t own a laptop. Fast-forward to today, I own 2 laptops. I now work from home. Yes, I do and I am sure you have heard that term before – working from home.

As a freelance writer, I work from virtually any part of the world, provided I have an Internet-enabled devices, such as a smartphone or laptop.

But the most thrilling aspect of this is that this type of work suits my lifestyle. I am an introvert – I rarely go out of my house, whether it is for hanging out with friends or to take a stroll. Therefore, having a job that allows me to work from my home office is a bonus.

Now, the aspect of writing I focus on doesn’t only serve as a source of income. It is also a long-term business that can sustain me if I played my cards right.
